Compassion & Grace

Yama #8 of the Classical Yogic Tradition

What is Classical Yoga?

This back-to-basics series of gatherings in pursuit of truth (Sat-Sangha) addresses the fundamentals of the yogic philosophy and practice, through a systematic approach to the cultivation of awareness and spiritual practice.

Through these gatherings you will learn to overcome cycles of body-mind suffering, and skillfully engage life in order to reap the fruits of your practice, thereby creating a life according to your own personal vision of joy.

This month’s topic is:

Kṛpā (कृपा) or ‘grace; compassion; forgiveness; tenderness, and kindness’. Kṛpā is the eigth quality of virtue cultivated as part of the broader ethical framework of the restraint practices known as Yamas (guidelines for spiritual practice)

Kṛpā is a profound spiritual force—the transformative power of enlightened beings. Central to the idea of Śaktipāta, the descent of divine grace (anugraha), it is one of the ultimate keys to freedom, a.k.a. spiritual liberation. Cultivated, this grace is said to awaken one’s own dormant Śakti (energy, or Kundalini), leading to self-recognition and the awareness of one’s essence nature.

Kṛpā is closely related to the Buddhist karuṇā (करुणा), the bodhisattvic compassion that drives enlightened beings to aid all sentient beings. We’ll explore this topic deeply, both in terms of personal compassion and empathy, as well as in the broader context of free will (svātantrya), and discover how kṛpā dissolves ignorance (avidyā) and burns lifetimes of karma in an instant.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Guided Meditations: Engage in meditative practices designed to help you reflect on your alignment with life, enabling you to become a conduit for grace and compassion,  and transmit healing and blessing energy to your ancestors and community, and for the wellbeing of the entire world.
  • Deep Discourse: Rich discussions that explore the reality of compassion, from both a Mother Natural perspective, as well as from the point of view of the personal ego. The latter is not bad in any way! But the former is the stuff of miracles.
  • Scholarly Insights: Benefit from scholarly references that deepen your understanding of Krpa and how its principles play out in our life. Cultivate insight and awareness around these principles and allow them to nest in you as you learn to allow the power of all the Yamas to support your Great Vow, and provide the firm foundation of a spiritual practice that bears fruit.

Featured Guided Meditations:

  • The Blessing Mandala

A life-defining engagement with the foundations of classical wisdom traditions.
