The Thoth Tarot are the evolution of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. A.E. Waite and Aleister Crowley were brothers in the same occult fraternity known as the Golden Dawn back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The order was dedicated to culling the global wisdom traditions and presenting them to the intelligentsia of Europe, which they did through poetry, ritual, and various magical methodology. One of these methods is known as Kabbalah.
For an authentic look into Kabbalah, Merkabah mysticism, or Jewish mysticism in general, readers will want to acquire the works of Gershom Scholem, the preeminent authority on these matters. However, for Tarot-philes, you’ll want to be developing an appreciation for the philosophies of A. Crowley, at least in terms of the Tarot. The Thoth Tarot are the next generation of Tarot thought, each card applied to the Tree of Life, tracing the mystical path of the evolution of Source, through every layer of reality, to evolve into the Great Elements before finally manifesting as the embodied human condition. In this way, the philosophy of ‘Kabbalistic’ Tarot shares major overlap with traditions like classical Tantrik-Yoga.
